Saul Indian horse is the main contributor to this book, without him there would be no book, or rather no book with the title of “Indian Horse”. Saul is the main character and the book is taken from his point of view. He contributes his life story to the book throughout all of the twists and turns he contributes every detail to the book. Indian Horse unfolds against the bleak loveliness of northern Ontario, all rock, marsh, bog and cedar. Wagamese writes with a spare beauty, penetrating the heart of a remarkable Ojibway man. Drawing on his great-grandfather's mystical gift of vision, Saul Indian Horse comes to recognize the influence of everyday magic on his own life.

The setting varies throughout the plot of this novel. The novel is based around the small town of White River, Ontario, which is a 4 hour drive from Thunder Bay. Saul, is enrolled in St. Jerome's Indian Residential School after the death of his Grandmother. He is the author of six novels, one collection of poetry and three memoirs. His most recent novels, Indian Horse () and Medicine Walk () were national bestsellers and published to brilliant reviews.
